Second Editorial: MQM gets rid of Dr Amir Liaquat Hussain
The MQM has announced that the popular religious TV person, Amir Liaquat Hussain, is no longer a member of the party’s Rabita Committee because he is making statements that arouse “religious hatred”. The announcement specified that he had been “warned earlier to stop making such statements on his television programme”. The MQM actually said that owing to his inclination to arouse religious hatred “his party responsibilities were ended one and a half years ago and his membership was suspended as well”. Now the MQM doesn’t want to be “responsible for any of his words and deeds”.
Some people who admire Mr Hussain think he resigned from the government of Mr Shaukat Aziz in protest against the British government’s decision to knight writer Salman Rushdie. Since this doesn’t stand to reason, it is more likely that he was forced to resign because he sided with the vigilante gangs of Lal Masjid and made it public on a TV channel. However, this time he is likely to have crossed another more dangerous red line. His recent programme was used to spew hatred against a certain community already declared non-Muslim, proposing death to it if it remained recalcitrant. After that, one doctor belonging to the Ahmedi community in Mirpur Khas and another person heading the community in Nawab Shah in Sindh were shot to death. *
