AMIEN RAIS: “IF YOU DISLIKE AHMADIYAH, JUST DON’T FOLLOW IT”

Surabaya (ANTARA News) - Former General Chairman of Muhammadiyah, the second largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, Prof Dr Amien Rais has said that if people disliked the Ahmadiyah, don’t follow it, and they do not have the right to resort to destructive means in expressing their dislike.

“The best attitude in facing Ahmadiyah is highly upholding religious tolerance, but not by destructive means,” Amien said after a meeting with the rector of the Surabaya-based Institute of Technology (ITS) Prof Dr Ir Mohammad Nuh DEA here on Friday (Aug. 5).

According to him, moslems are allowed conduct a campaign in the Islamic community to prevent themselves from being influenced by Ahmadiyah teachings. But they are forbidden to take the law into their own hands by destroying the Ahmadiyah office, campus and houses of prayer.

If the Ahmadiyah had been declared to deviate from true Islam, the Koran itself has already specified that there would be many versions of misleading islamic faiths and there was no force in embracing a religion, “Laa igroha fid din”, he said while quoting an article in the Koran.

Therefore, Amien Rais, former chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and general chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN) said that the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) should make a more flexible formulation in issuing a ruling and try to avoid using the world “sesat” (misleading).

“But, I really appreciate MUI for its plan to hold a dialogue with the Ahmadiyah. I think a dialogue would be the best solution to such misunderstanding,” he said.
