Jakarta (ANTARA News) — General Chairman of Muhammadiyah, second biggest Moslem organization in Indonesia, Dien Syamsuddin, denounced the arsonists attacking the homes of Ahmadiyah followers in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday.

“In my view every religion or ideology condemn arson,” he said here on Sunday, adding that no religious teachings or ideology justify violence.

Thus, Syamsuddin who is concurrently vice chairman of the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) called on fellow Moslems not to be easily provoked to resorting to violence as what had happened in West Lombok.

He also called on the government to investigate the incident and take firm measures against the arsonists.

A number of arsonists burned down dozens of houses belonging to the Ahmadiyah followers in Geria village in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

Some 50 Ahmadiyah followers had been evacuated to local police stations before the attack.(*)
