Ahmadiyah Leaders Seek Police Protection

Jakarta (ANTARA News) — Several leaders of the Ahmadiyah Islamic sect visited the National Police headquarters here on Monday to seek protection following anarchic actions against their members in Lombok some time ago.

“This is our second visit to the National Police headquarters for the same purpose,” Ahmadiyah spokesman Mubarik said.

He said the Ahmadiyah leaders had also come to report alleged involvement of two Islamic organizations in violent acts against Ahmadiyah followers.

He said the incident would have a serious impact on the life of the unitary state of Indonesia.

He said it was not impossible that the threats against Ahmadiyah followers would also be made against other minority groups in the country. He believed they would target other minority groups if their first operation was successful.

The police meanwhile said that they would always protect all citizens including the Ahmadiyah followers from any threat from other parties.

“We will protect anyone because the tasks of the police is protecting and securing the community. Nobody may destroy other people’s property,” National Polices spokesman Brig Gen Anton Bachrul Alam said in response to the visit of the Ahmadiyah leaders.

He said the police would protect the Ahmadiyah followers because they had the same right to live in the country.(*)
